PLEX

Plex is an award winning hip-hop artist and producer based in Toronto, Canada. With over 15 years experience, Plex has raised the bar amongst his Aboriginal peers while building a strong and relevant presence in mainstream Canadian Hip Hop. Since releasing his debut solo album in 2009, Plex has toured across the US and Canada performing, teaching workshops to aboriginal youth and running his independent recording label New Leaf Entertainment.

RYAN McMAHON

Ryan McMahon is one of the most dynamic Aboriginal/Native American Comedians working in Canada and the United States today. He’s one of the FIRST Native graduates of the prestigious Second City Conservatory (Toronto) – the same place where comedians like John Candy, Martin Short, Mike Myers & Eugene Levy studied. His show is a loose, fast paced, silly but always honest look at society from the perspective of a “Native dude.” Ryan’s comedy is irreverent and boundry pushing as he focuses his attention on the good, the bad & the ugly of the collision between Indian Country and the mainstream.

ANDREA MENARD

Andrea Menard, a multi-talented Métis performer, is a true renaissance woman; she is an actor, a singer, a writer, and a music messenger, excelling in the four creative areas that make up her own personal medicine wheel. With a voice that chills your spine, she dazzles on stage and screen, bringing audiences to tears. Andrea’s voice is lyrical, raw, and reminiscent of the jazz and blues singers of the 1940’s, yet she captures the depth, humour and wisdom of her ancestors.

Andrea Menard is mesmerizing in her Gemini-nominated television starring roles, The Velvet Devil, Moccasin Flats, and Rabbit Fall. She currently stars in Blackstone and Hard Rock Medical, and has released three award-winning albums: The Velvet Devil, Simple Steps, and Sparkle. Menard’s holiday tv special, called Sparkle: An Evening with Andrea Menard and Menard’s made-for-television movie, The Velvet Devil, which is adapted from her one-woman musical stage play, both earned Gemini nominations for Menard’s outstanding performance.

A Cree/Métis woman who grew up North of the Saskatchewan River.  Liza fell in love with the music world at a young age when she discovered the mysterious and exciting qualities of music suited my introspective nature.  Greatly influenced by classic country, folk and the rhythm & blues,Liza also loves many other genres.  Liza describes her  music as contemporary Aboriginal /Country/Folk/Blues genre. Her  first CD is titled “Facing the Storm” and the songs on it are about love and heartbreak, survival, remembering, resilience, joy in life, and letting go and being open to new growth.

ISKWEW SINGERS

Iskwew Singers are a Vancouver-based, professional trio of First Nations women who create and perform songs in the plains Cree tradition that tell stories of the connection to the earth, the creator and one another. The heartbeat of mother earth is heard through their drums, underscoring a message of culture from a people who have survived the impacts of colonization.Coming from the Cree Nation of Canada, Krystle Pederson, Sandy Scofield and Fara Palmer are all award winners. Through Iskwew, these powerful singers bring the songs and sounds of their rich and vibrant culture to the ears of the world.

When Conrad Bigknife and Brett Johnstone decided to work together and form Billy Grind, they quickly realized they had found that magic combination. Their energy, heart, drive and talent all woven together is what makes the Billy Grind sound. Conrad Bigknife is a vocalist and musician who was born on Star Blanket First Nation.He has had numerous top ten singles on the National Aboriginal charts and has reached the Number 1 position in the country, and number 2 in all of North America. He was also featured in the CMT series “Big In a Small Town”, and was proud to be awarded the Aboriginal Vocalist of the Year Award for Saskatchewan in 2013. Brett Johnstone grew up finding his passion was playing guitar. He pulls influences from all the genres of music he loves, which includes heavy metal , blues and country. Always true to their roots, they shine as a duo, or they can add some talented players to join them in making country music that’s loud and proud. Either way, it’s an experience you don’t want to miss.

AMANDA RHEAUME

Métis singer-songwriter Amanda Rheaume is a powerful vocalist with just a touch of grit and an instantly-accessible roots-pop-Americana sound. Her latest album “Keep a Fire”(2013), is a varied and evocative collection of mostly story-songs about her ancestors that more than lives up to the tradition of epic family-of-origin albums. Amanda’s songwriting style provides the perfect vehicle to get her narratives across, whether she’s playing solo with just her guitar, or there’s a full band behind her, the song is invariably the attraction. Her life as a travelling musician has taken her down many roads. Performing over 160 shows a year, Amanda has delivered her unique blend of folk-country-pop twinged tracks to audiences around the world, including the USA, Europe, Faroe Islands, Central America and more.

On September 15th 2007 Don walked off his day job and made that the day he would pursue a full time music career. So far he’s been nominated for 11 awards and just won Aboriginal Male Artist of the year and Songwriter of the year.From the North End of Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada, Amero has definitely faced his share of adversity. With poverty, gangs, drugs and violence as daily reminders of the harshness of the world, Don’s life was nevertheless tempered by love, support and the knowledge that a Greater Power was intimately involved in his life. Shaped and molded by his coming of age, his music now carries both the depth of experiencing hardship and the luminosity of experiencing hope. All who have the pleasure of listening to his music will no doubt leave with his encouraging message of positivity lifting their spirits.

Kinder Scout’s EP debut “Whistleman” is a reflection on frontman Dale McArthur’s past few years and personal life in the music scene. His drive and opportunities in the music industry have led him to share the stages with the likes of Marcy Playground, Trooper, State Of Shock, Bleeker Ridge, One Bad Son, Econoline Crush, to name a few well known legends.Kinder Scout consists of Dale McArthur, Jay Bird, and Jay Spilchen. All talented artists from great bands in the local scene who have formed the three-piece now known as Kinder Scout, giving the scene a fresh Alternative/Rock/Roots flavour.

SCOTT PICARD (Softball athlete, team Eastern Door and the North, region 6)

Scott is from Sept-Iles (Uashat, QC) and he is 17 years old. He started to play small guitars when he was a kid. He got his first guitar when he was 4 years old; and he started to learn by himself. In 2007 and 2008, he won the Mini Star Academy for the Innu Nikamu Festival. Scott used to play during the National Aboriginal Day on June 21rst. He is often invited in primary schools to sing and he is very involved in his community. Scott has already written 3 songs.

FARA PALMER

Blessed with a love of music and a powerful set of pipes, Fara got her first taste of stage-life at the age of twelve when she sang at an outdoor concert alongside artists such as: Buffy Ste. Marie, Floyd ‘Red Crow’ Westerman, Morley Loon & Winstun Wuttinee. Since then she has been acknowledged as a
powerhouse vocalist, a heart and soul inspired songwriter, role model and a dedicated workshop presenter. Fara has performed for audiences across North America and has shared the stage with artists such as: Shania Twain, Ray Charles, Sarah McLoughlin, Jann Arden and many others. She has sung national
anthems to open games for the NBA, WWF, and the North American Indigenous Games. A number of Fara’s songs have been placed in movies, television series, and made for TV special movie presentations.

CONSTANT REMINDER

Constant Reminder is a group of brothers that play in a rock n roll band that began playing together as a full group in 2012. They had another brother join the group the Bass player in 2012. The band consists of Seth who is the lead guitarist and is 19, Cole is the rhythm and Vocalist of the group he is 17, Ethan is the bass player and he is 16 and the Drummer for the group is Rene and he is 13. They go around Saskatchewan helping the youth, by inspiring and influencing and helping. That’s what Constant Reminder is to help, to inspire, to influence people young and old. They are trying their best to change the world.

His production expertise and keyboard work gave the emerging Midnight Shine sound a thorough polish, as Adrian explains. “Doug did a wonderful job of bringing a lighter ‘ear candy’ quality out of the music.”

WEDNESDAY July 23rd

Rock Cree is a collection of stories told by Bill Cook through music in English and Cree. The Universal Language of Music will speak to the listener. Bill is a singer/songwriter/performer that lives in Regina. He has been singing and writing original material since 1999. After singing in a rock band for many years Rock Cree is a new solo music venture for Bill. It has been years in the works collecting and creating musical stories of his life.

WESLEY HARDISTY 

Wesley Hardisty is one to watch! Wesley’s fiddle playing is unique, emotional and compelling. Still in his teens, he has an impressive resume- including the Vancouver 2010 Olympics, the Truth and Reconciliation Commission national event in Inuvik and a performance for the Royal Couple Will and Kate. Wesley was featured on Aboriginal Peoples TV show Breaking New Beats as one of the cutting edge young Aboriginal talents in Canada.

THE DEAD SOUTH

The Dead South is a four-piece acoustic ensemble based in Regina, Saskatchewan. With Nate Hilts’ gritty vocals and aggressive guitar strumming, Scott Pringle’s soaring harmonies and mandolin chops, Colton Crawford’s blazing banjo licks and steady kick drum, and Danny Kenyon’s prominent cello melodies, The Dead South blends elements of folk, bluegrass, classical, and rock which results in a unique, modern, and authentic blend of boot-stompin’ acoustic music.
The Dead South has been hard at work since they formed as a band, having played several notable shows, some of which include: playing at the Saskatchewan Party Premier’s Dinner for a crowd of over 2000 people, playing for Juno Fest 2013 and 2014, playing for Grey Cup Festival 2013, opening for Serena Ryder, playing the main stage at the Montmartre All Folk’d Up Music Festival, and playing at the Picker’s Cup Festival.

2012 JUNO Award winner Murray Porter’s music has an instantly recognizable sound.  The Mohawk piano player from Six Nations of the Grand River Territory brings his culture and history to the masses through his music.  With a mix of blues, country, and humour, Porter’s gravelly, soulful voice sings not only of the history and contemporary stories of the Aboriginal Peoples of Canada, but also universal themes of love, lost and found.  He has spent over 30 years playing his self-taught unique style of foot-stomping, hand clapping blues piano around the world.

A passionate singer/songwriter and soulful performer, Leela Gilday has a voice that comes straight from the heart.  Confessing her stories to her audiences with a gutsy voice and open stage presence, Gilday weaves her experiences as a northerner, a member of the Dene nation, and a traveler into a beautiful world that transports the listener. With three full-length recordings and a long touring history, Gilday has numerous awards to her credit, including a Juno, two Western Canadian Music Awards, Aboriginal Female Entertainer of the Year to name a few.  Above all, she seeks connection with her audiences through music, and with each record brings more unique stories to the world. Whether it’s an anthem for the oppressed, or an upbeat song about mortality, she infuses her songs with a sense of humour as well as a sense of social justice, and an ironic appreciation of human folly.

DIGGING ROOTS (HEADLINE PERFORMANCE)

‘Indie roots’, ‘global blues’, ‘jam band’, ‘Aboriginal alternative’? Call them what you will but Digging Roots are marching to the beat of their own drum. The five piece band from Toronto, Ontario seem to have found the right balance of fairytale good fortune, old fashion hard work and the creative chemistry to make a go of it.Frontman and frontwoman respectively, Raven Kanatakta and ShoShona Kish met at an audition for a music festival when they were both still students. Until then, they had been playing small cafes and open mic stages, in between studying for exams. They won their first gig after their chance meeting that day and haven’t looked back. They started writing songs and were playing the odd show as a duo when music manager Derek Andrews approached them in 2005, the same year they signed a record deal, put together a band and started touring. Digging Roots was born. The following year they released their debut album ‘seeds’, to a wealth of critical success, awards and a JUNO nomination.

Never being one to follow the crowd, it comes as no surprise that Saskatchewan pop artist LJ Tyson has already figured out why he loves music. Whether he is entertaining audiences for pure enjoyment or presenting one of his anti-bullying shows, music is always present in this young artists work. LJ believes that music can heal and has used it his entire life to help him through tough situations. He uses his music to talk to others regarding bullying and being yourself.

What is our ‘sound’ you ask? We are a multitude of sounds. All of our music tastes vary which is what makes us work. Our Indigenous heritage plays a large role in our music and showcases the talent of our people. Although we are less than a year old we have compiled a full CD of songs, performed live, and our first video is completed. Our goal: share our music with the Maritimes, and rest of Canada. East Coast Music Awards and one day, Internationally.

JASON CHAMAKESE & ROBERT GLADUE

Jason Chamakese and Robert Gladue have performed together since 2010. Combining drumming and singing with the traditional flute, their music has taken them throughout their home province of Saskatchewan, North America and abroad. From the Pelican Lake and Waterhen Lake First Nation respectively, Jason and Robert use their gifts towards inspiring First Nations youth towards embracing and protecting their language and culture.

THE RECKLESS FAMOUS

The Reckless Famous formed in August 2013 under BIGG Entertainment by established Singer/Songwriter Adam Jack. Consisting  of Kyle Wuttunee of Onion Lake First Nation, Josh Cross of Frog Lake Frist Nation, Earl Bull of Little Pine First Nation, Adam Jack of Makwa Sahgaiehcan First Nation and new part-time member, Preston Starchief of Mosquito First Nation. Their refreshing combination of Rock N’ Roll, Heavy Rock, Pop Rock, Blues, Jazz, Funk and Soul presents
and commands a uniquely edgy and sexy sound, that’s topped by a captivating performance. Their sound comes from a wide array of influences; their sound can be compared to the sound styles of Guns N’ Roses, Lenny Kravitz, The Doors, Bruno Mars, Buckcherry, just to name a few.

With a stage presence that can stop people in their tracks, a voice that makes you wonder “did she just do that?” and songs that can stir up emotions you didn’t even know you had explain why Niska is quickly becoming a force in the indie music scene.  Having spent the last decade touring and performing in bands such as Red Power Squad, Iskwew, Rocky Mountain Rebel Music and The Napoleon Collective, Niska Napoleon is ready to prove why she is meant to be a solo artist, taking her debut album on a cross Canada tour this summer.

Called ‘One to Watch’ by The Grid TO and one of the ‘Top 10 Canadian Musicians You Need to Know’ by CBC Music, Iskwé’s cross-cultural aesthetic is as striking as her tripped-out blend of soul. The name Iskwé (pronounced iss-kway) means ‘woman’ in her native language. Iskwé’s debut album weaves together her Irish and Cree/Dene roots with hip hop breakbeats, left-field R&B, and traces of piano pop (Think Esthero meets Alicia Keys).

INDIAN CITY (HEADLINE PERFORMANCE)

Based out of Winnipeg Manitoba in the heart of Turtle Island Indian City brings to life music that stretches across the colorful landscape of pop, alternative rock, creatively fused with indigenous imagery. Drawing their inspiration from urban indigenous themes, Indian City captures it all with themes and lyrics that touch all aspects of the heart throbbing emotion of city life. The band consists of founder Vince Fontaine, singer Pamela Davis, vocalist Neewa Mason, Atik Mason on bass, Gerry Atwell on keyboard and Steve Broadhurst on drums. Rounding out the band is vocal stars Jeremy Koz and William Prince.

NATASHA & HANNAH FISHER

This soulful sister duo fronted by vocalist Natasha Fisher bring a refreshing Pop/R&B vibe to the stage. From Ojibway and Finnish roots, these talented beautiful young women grew up in Thunder Bay. They’ve been inspiring audiences throughout Northwestern Ontario at Aboriginal and Youth Festivals, schools, First Nations Communities, fairs and fundraisers. Natasha is an avid songwriter currently recording with Theymedia.  She is accompanied by Hannah Fisher on both acoustic and electric guitar.

K.A.S.P ‘s focus has shifted his music to a whole new level and he shares it with youth to motivate them to persevere no matter what happens in life. His songs tell a story of his struggle and success, and he shares the timeline of his life with others to help others have the strength to do the same. Kasp is dedicating his life to his family, his community and his people to show the youth that there is hope for a better today and brighter tomorrow. K.A.S.P is well known for his collaborations with DMC of the legendary RUN DMC, Moka Only, Chino XL and recent feature with Toronto’s own Choclair to list a few of his most inspiring alliances.

THE LOCAL ONLYZ

The Local Onlyz are a 4-piece hip-hop group from Regina.  The group forges a fresh path for hip-hop with the song writing arrangements and powerhouse vocal hooks of Thomas Roussin, the hip-hop savvy of Merky Waters, and the rich, deep voice and thought-provoking lyrical passages of InfoRed to create tracks ripe for rippin! The group is dedicated to using original instrumentation as much as possible – creating sounds with guitar, mandolin, bass, Rhodes piano and live drums.

As a part of the Innersoulflow collective crew, she has appeared on countless releases throughout North America. In true fashion to the history of both hip hop and Indigenous Cree culture she represents through compelling and experimental storytelling rhymes. Eekwol has been enhancing hip hop with her own prairie style for over 10 years. She uses her mastery of words to communicate across the country, and has performed on countless stages across Canada. Her desire to recognize her Indigenous Plains Cree and hip hop roots can be fully experienced through her powerful music and performance. Currently, Eekwol and Mils are promoting their latest effort

SUPAMAN

As a member of the “Apsaalooke Nation”, Supaman makes his home on the Crow reservation in Montana. The name “Supaman” hardly describes the person who Is Christian Takes Gun Parrish, a humble Native American dancer and hip hop artist who has dedicated his life to empowering youth and educating listeners with a message of hope through culture and music. He recently was awarded the Magic City Music Award for best rap act and was voted MTV’s new Artist
of the Week. His latest video titled “Prayer Loop Song” has received over 250,000 views in one month! Christian’s presentation combines Native American culture, humor, and urban hip hop culture which dazzles audiences, captivates listeners and breaks down stereotypes. For this he has gained the respect of his culture and generation. He is a champion fancy dancer traveling extensively on the powwow circuit throughout the U.S and Canada and lives a drug and alcohol free life.

JOEY STYLEZ FEAT. Special Performance by CARSEN GRAY (HEADLINE PERFORMANCE)

In 2004, when Joey Stylez sought to bring Native American presence and fashion to the urban mainstream, many believed that it was an impossible dream. Stylez is seen as the pioneer of the Native Rapper craze which has swept across Reservations and urban cityscapes throughout North America. His latest project “FEATHER + ROSARY” focuses on social issues and demons young native men must face in present day society.

ASHAM STOMPERS

The Asham Stompers are a very high energy Jig and Square Dance group that that bring fans to their feet EVERYWHERE they perform.Their Mission “Is to help recapture and preserve the history of the Métis people through the Traditional dancing of Red River Jig”. They combine Red River Jig with square dance which has been done in the Aboriginal Communities for so long, aptly called the Red River Dance. Their group is half Metis and half First Nations. Their purpose is to help bring hope to the Aboriginal people by taking something that is already a part of most Aboriginal communities and sharing it with the world.

SAGKEENG’S FINEST

Sagkeeng’s Finest is a fairytale story about three young Aboriginal men off the Sagkeeng Indian Reservation in Central Manitoba Canada who entered “Canada Got Talent” (Canada’s version of America’s Got Talent) along with over 11,000 other hopeful contestants and won it all.Vince O’Laney, 17, and brothers Brandon, 18, and Dallas Courchene, 17, all began dancing in their community only a few years ago. Their blend of traditional jigging blended artfully with modern, clogging and tap styles has created a unique and infectious style of upbeat dance; this troupe is one not to miss! And they are joined by well know Manitoba Fiddling Sensation Shawn Mousseau from Lake Manitoba First Nations who is a one man band who has all his music on a keyboard and takes of his shoes and chords with his toes while fiddling.

Andrea Menard is mesmerizing in her Gemini-nominated television starring roles, The Velvet Devil, Moccasin Flats, and Rabbit Fall. She currently stars in Blackstone and Hard Rock Medical, and has released three award-winning albums: The Velvet Devil, Simple Steps, and Sparkle. Menard’s holiday tv special, called Sparkle: An Evening with Andrea Menard and Menard’s made-for-television movie, The Velvet Devil, which is adapted from her one-woman musical stage play, both earned Gemini nominations for Menard’s outstanding performance.

Stylez is seen as the pioneer of the Native Rapper craze which has swept across Reservations and urban cityscapes throughout North America. His latest project “FEATHER + ROSARY” focuses on social issues and demons young native men must face in present day society.

A TRIBE CALLED RED (HEADLINE PERFORMANCE)

Bursting forth from Canada’s capital, native Producer/DJ crew A Tribe Called Red is producing a truly unique sound that’s impacting the global electronic scene and urban club culture. Since 2010 the group – made up of two-time Canadian DMC Champion DJ Shub, DJ NDN and DJ Bear Witness – has been mixing traditional pow wow vocals and drumming with cutting-edge electronic music. Their self-titled album, released in March 2012, was long-listed for Canada’s prestigious Polaris Music Prize and included in the Washington Post’s top 10 albums of the year.

Since making their explosive debut over 5 years ago, Winnipeg’s Aboriginal School of Dance has become the #1 choice for multicultural entertainment and educational programming, offering a unique way of expressing multiculturalism through performance art. They are known for energetic and innovative choreography that provokes an intense emotional experience for audiences of all ages and cultural backgrounds. By fusing traditional styles with contemporary fields and educational value, their presentations foster empathy and understanding while teaching about Aboriginal culture.

Island Breeze is one of many YWAM operation. With operations bases in 8 countries, Island Breeze is committed to redeeming cultures back to its original purpose,concentrating on indigenous people groups. Led by Pacific Islanders, they use cultural dance and ceremonial events from the Polynesian Islands. For 25 years Island Breeze has had a consistent presence in Canada among First Nations peoples. Island Breeze teams are made of 6 to 20 people. Over the years, 172 Samoans and another 50 Pacific Islanders have served alongside Aboriginals.

 TNT  SQUARE DANCERS

The TNT square dancers formed 7 years ago in Dauphin, Manitoba .  The core group members are from the Waywayseecappo First  Nation and the Duck Bay Metis Nation.   TNT was fortunate to have had various talented dancers join our group in the past and at present.  TNT square dancers have performed at various locations throughout Manitoba including Winnipeg, Brandon, Dauphin, Rolling River First Nation, Duck Bay Metis Community, Birdtail Dakota Nation, Peguis First Nation, Sagkeeng First Nation, and the annual Redy Creek Asham Stomper Festival.  TNT has danced at the St. Albert Metis Festival in Alberta, NAIG promotional performance 2013 in Regina, SK and are current reigning champions at Batoche, SK, 2013.

The Thundering Hills Dance Troupe is a culturally enriched performance and art company that was founded to promote and bring a taste of the rich history, dance and song of the First Nations people in Saskatchewan to the world. The dance troupe travels and performs at different venues throughout Saskatchewan and Canada to give non-first nations the opportunity to see first-hand the diversity and culture of First Nations.
